In a powerful closing act for our recent season, Bashosho Talents Theatre group used the stage to ignite a crucial conversation. Our final performance, “Land of Mirima” (Land of Sorrows in Luo), addressed the devastating issue of sexual assault, leaving a lasting impact on our audience.
A Story Rooted in Reality
“Land of Mirima” is a traditional, Luo-fused theatrical piece that delves into the heartbreaking reality faced by many young girls – and boys – even in the modern world. The play portrays the tragic consequences of child marriage and sexual assault, often justified under the guise of respecting cultural traditions.
Breaking the Cycle Through Theatre
We believe in the power of theatre to not only entertain but also to spark important conversations and enact positive change. “Land of Mirima” is our contribution to:
- Raising Awareness: Shedding light on the prevalence of sexual assault, particularly within cultural practices.
- Challenging Norms: Encouraging audiences to question harmful traditions that prioritize customs over the well-being of young people.
- Empowering Survivors: Creating a platform for survivors to feel heard and empowered to seek help.
Standing Together to End Sexual Assault

This impactful performance, held in collaboration with Maisha Girls Safe House, exemplifies our commitment to social change. We, along with other dedicated organizations, stand united in the fight to end sexual assault.
“Land of Mirima” may be our closing act, but the fight continues. By sparking dialogue and challenging harmful norms, we can create a future where such injustices are a thing of the past.
