A Powerful Performance to Address GBV and Mental Health
In the heart of Kiambiu Slum, a vibrant tapestry of stories unfolded through the power of theatre. Bashosho Talents CBO, in partnership with HESED Africa, staged a groundbreaking street theatre performance to address the pressing issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and mental health.
A Community United Against Silence
On Saturday, August 31st, 2024, the streets of Kiambiu came alive with the sounds of laughter, tears, and the collective voice of a community demanding change. The performances, held across Mabatini, Kosovo Junction, and Sagana villages, captivated audiences and sparked crucial conversations.
Breaking Barriers, Building Hope
The project aimed to:
- Raise awareness: Shed light on the pervasive issue of GBV and the often-overlooked mental health challenges faced by residents.
- Foster dialogue: Create a safe space for community members to share their experiences, concerns, and potential solutions.
- Identify needs: Pinpoint gaps in existing services and advocate for targeted interventions.
Through powerful storytelling, the performances brought to life the realities of GBV and its devastating impact on individuals and families. The audience was not merely spectators but active participants, engaging in thought-provoking discussions and sharing their own experiences.
A Call for Action
The project highlighted the urgent need for:
- Increased awareness: Continuing to educate the community about GBV and mental health, breaking down stigmas, and promoting understanding.
- Accessible services: Ensuring that survivors have access to counseling, support groups, and legal assistance.
- Community-driven initiatives: Empowering residents to take ownership of their safety and well-being through community-led programs and initiatives.
A Bright Future for Kiambiu
The street theatre project was a resounding success, demonstrating the transformative power of art in addressing societal challenges. By uniting the community through shared experiences and fostering a sense of hope, the project paved the way for a brighter future for Kiambiu.

As we move forward, it is imperative to build upon the momentum generated by this initiative. By continuing to raise awareness, advocate for change, and provide essential support services, we can create a Kiambiu where every individual feels safe, valued, and empowered.
Let us join together to break the silence, challenge the status quo, and build a community where justice, equality, and well-being prevail.
