Spreading Peace and Unity through Art: The Amani Yangu Campaign
Amani Yangu, a powerful peace campaign, was brought to life through the medium of theater. Our rallying cry, “Amani Yangu Amani Yako,” emphasized that peace begins with each individual and that together, we can create a more harmonious society. Four months prior to the August 2022 general elections in Kenya, we embarked on a mission to spread messages of peace, love, and unity through a series of stage and street theater performances.
Our performances took place in various parts of Nairobi, including KICC, Mathare, and Kiambiu slums, among other locations. Through our art, we sought to inspire a culture of peace before, during, and after the elections. As a nation, Kenya has experienced its share of electoral violence, and we were determined to make a positive impact through our campaign.
Although our impact may have been small, we are proud to have contributed to a more peaceful electoral process. The Amani Yangu campaign served as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the transformative power of art in promoting social change.
